REQUIREMENTS

Preparatory Strings

SCALES

Be prepared to demonstrate one sharp and one flat scale - in one or two octave scales.  Play slowly and confidently from memory, with separate, full bows. 

SOLO

One solo showing your current playing ability.  Your solo should demonstrate good intonation, various bowings, dynamics and accurate counting skills.  Your solo should not be more than 3 minutes in duration.

SIGHT-READING

Several small sections of our current repertoire will be given to you for sight-reading.  Take your time, look through the piece first, and then attempt to get notes, counting, bowings, dynamics and musicality.

JUDGING

All auditions will be judged on a scale of 1-10 for each of the following 5 categories:  musicality, intonation, rhythm, tone & sight-reading.  The difficulty level of your solo will also be taken into consideration.

UPPER POSITIONS

Knowledge of third position will affect placement within the Junior Strings (1st violins must know 3rd position).  If you know third positions, please let your scales and solo reflect that knowledge.

  

Full Orchestra

SCALES

SOLO

One solo showing your current playing ability.  Solo should demonstrate good intonation, dynamics and accurate counting skills (strings: demonstrate advanced bowings).  Your solo should not be more than 3 minutes in duration.

SIGHT-READING

Several small sections of our current repertoire will be given to you for sight-reading.  Take your time and look through the piece first, and then attempt to get notes, counting, dynamics and musicality (strings: also attempt bowings).

JUDGING

STRINGS

Knowledge of upper positions (beyond third position) will affect placement within the Advanced Strings.  If you know upper positions, please let your scales and solo reflect that knowledge.  Use of vibrato is required for this group.
